Rugged Beauty from the Lake District
These beautiful large Herdwick sheepskins come from Millbeck Farm, a National Trust farm nestled in the hills of the Lake District. Full of character and individuality, they have long been a favourite at Skyeskyns thanks to their distinctive colouring and unmistakable charm.
Unlike a traditional soft lambskin, Herdwick fleeces offer something altogether different. Naturally rugged and full of texture, they bring depth, warmth and authenticity to a space. Whether draped over a chair, laid beside the fire or used to add texture to a bedroom, each fleece makes a striking statement.
The Breed
The Herdwick is one of Britain's most iconic hill breeds, shaped by generations spent roaming the fells of the Lake District. Hardy and resilient, these sheep thrive in challenging upland conditions and are prized for their distinctive fleeces and strong connection to the landscape.
The Fleece
Herdwick wool is slower growing and naturally coarser than that of many other breeds. Rather than the silky softness of a lambskin, these fleeces offer texture, character and durability. Many feature a distinctive outer layer of longer, hairier fibres, with softer wool beneath, creating depth and interest that is unique to the breed.
Natural Colours
One of the most appealing features of the Herdwick fleece is its beautiful natural colouring. Shades range from pale silver-grey and warm brown through to deeper charcoal and steel-grey tones. Every sheepskin is unique, with natural variations in colour, pattern and markings that reflect the individuality of the animal.
From Millbeck Farm
Millbeck Farm is a National Trust farm in the Lake District, where livestock is reared naturally and in keeping with the surrounding landscape. These fleeces are a true reflection of the region's farming heritage and the enduring character of the Herdwick breed.
Size
Our Large Herdwick sheepskins vary naturally in shape and size, but are typically:
