Description

These large and beautiful Herdwick sheepskins come straight from the hills of a National Trust farm, in the Lake District. Herdwick sheepskins have been popular at Skyeskyns for many years because of the beautiful colouring which looks wonderful in any interior. Although some Herdwicks may be soft, this is far from the more traditional soft lambskin. If you are looking for something a bit different then this is the one for you, it has character, ruggedness and individuality, the perfect combination!

THE BREED

The Herdwick is a hardy breed, traditionally hill-farmed, which is bred both its meat and its wool.  It takes about 18 months to mature in tough conditions.

THE FLEECE

A slow growing breed, the Herdwick wool is much coarser than the standard sheep. It's very different from your average fleece, not the soft wool you might be used to, but with its own charm.  Please bear in mind that Herdwick fleeces can sometimes have a "hairy outer" with softer wool at its core, and a more bristly type of wool growth on top.

THE COLOURS

Herdwicks generally sport a fascinating mix of grey, brown and white tones. The range available from Millbeck Farm is broad and encompasses everything from mostly pale grey to darker steel grey tones, with mixed grey and brown fleeces in between.

WHERE THEY COME FROM

Millbeck Farm is a National Trust farm where all livestock is reared completely naturally.  Find out more here: Millbeck Farm (skyeskyns.co.uk)

These "large" Herdwicks vary in size but are at least 95 to 100 cm long by 70 wide.

Care & Maintenance Advice

To keep your sheepskin looking as good as the day you bought it, restore the texture of the wool from time to time using a metal brush or comb. On the back of each sheepskin, you will find a stamp detailing whether the fleece is washable or dry clean only. For a spot clean or refresh, use a damp cloth and our Woolly Fresh Spray. Use the latter sparingly. You can hand wash or machine wash your fleece on a wool cycle at 30 degrees Celsius with a wool-specific soap or our Woolly Wash. Dry in the shade and do not expose the leather to heat. When dry, shake vigorously and rejuvenate the pile using a brush. Due to the nature of this particular breed it can be prone to shedding. We recommend brushing outdoors where possible.
