HYGGE- HIGHLAND ISLAND STYLE

So, the weather on Skye has turned positively autumnal and we are talking all things Hygge in preparation for cosying up for longer nights. So, what is Hygge (pronounced, HOOGAH) and what does it have to do with us?  For those of you who have missed the outpouring of international appreciation for this Danish lifestyle craze, in simple terms, Hygge is about snuggling up and taking a moment.  It’s all about appreciating the simple and small pleasures in life whether that’s a hot mug of cocoa and a good book by the fireside or a big bowl of something scrummy shared with friends as the sun sets and the candles are lit.  Danes are considered to be the happiest people in the world and many claim it’s all down to Hygge.

Skyeskyns Summer Campaign – The Making of…

After opening our very own yurt café here at Skyeskyns this Easter we decided that one tent simply was not enough!  Seeing how fabulous our sheepskins looked inside our yurt with its cosy yet stylish atmosphere, we wanted to portray how easily sheepskins could add comfort, warmth and style to your summer camping experience.  So yes, we purchased yet another tent!  With a little help from our friends the ‘Glamping’ campaign began to take shape…

A Local & Sustainable Collaboration with R.House

At the beginning of 2016 we were approached by well-known local architecture and building firm R.House. R.House have grown in success by creating sustainable, affordable housing in the Highlands and Islands from ecologically friendly materials, and processes, for a number of years.  Initially R.House were interested in a selection of sheepskin to be placed into a new residential development show house in Montrose Woods, Aldern.  This was to be the first show house offering and largest project thus far for R.House so we felt very honoured to be included, being assembled alongside fellow Skye based luxury manufacturers Skye Weavers.

Guest Blog: Aldo Kane Team Essence

Find out why Aldo Kane, Team Essence rower, says Skyeskyns sheepskin saved their transatlantic mainland to mainland world record setting in his guest blog for us….

As Team Essence, our mission was to be the first ever team of Rowers to row form Mainland Europe to Mainland South America.  As complete novices, we set ourselves the goal of setting this new world record in less than 52 days.  On the 29th of March, 2016, we as a team landed our 8 meter rowing boat on a remote sandy beech on the North Eastern coast of Venezuela after 50 days, 10 hours and 36 minutes at sea.  A total journey of over 3600 nautical miles making it also one of the longest routes ever rowed across the Atlantic Ocean  With all of these records combined, Team Essence accrued in total 3 separate world records as verified by Guinness.

Team Essence – The Rogues of Ocean Rowing

Back in January we were contacted via Twitter by ‘Team Essence’ a group of extreme adventurers about to embark on an unbelievable journey in aid of NSPCC (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children).   On the 7th of February the five friends began the epic journey from Lagos, Portugal to mainland Venezuela a total of 3807 miles.  The ex-Royal Marine and Special Forces professionals were by no means experienced rowers before undertaking training.  The current record for this unusual route is 52 days, the team are rowing two hours on, two hours off 24 hours a day.

Johnstons of Elgin & Skyeskyns

As many of you are aware we are very proud to work with well-known brand Johnstons of Elgin.  As family businesses with similar values, we welcome this connection with a fellow Scottish textile company.

Skyeskyns now sells a stylish range of Johnstons of Elgin lambswool travel rugs, and cashmere clothing for both men and women.  Johnstons of Elgin have been making fine woollen cloth, knitwear, cashmere and accessories since 1797.  With hundreds of years of experience Johnstons now supply many retailers and designers.

Skyeskyns was established a little later in 1983!  The two families later met and in 2013 welcomed Ian Urquhart from Johnstons of Elgin and his daughter, Jenny Holdsworth, as guests of honour for a 30th Anniversary celebration when we established our business connection.

We now stock a wide range of seasonal scarves from full cashmere gingham stoles to light patterned Merino's.  Each season members of the Skyeskyns team meet with a Johnstons of Elgin representative to choose a complementing range of stock for our 5* showroom.

If you fancy having a look for yourself the Skyeskyns showroom is open 7 days a week throughout the year.    Alternatively our range is available via our online shop, or by clicking the Johnstons of Elgin logo below.

Why Sheepskin? Nursery Décor

Sheepskin has to be one of the most versatile interior products in the interior design world.  The natural colouration of a Skyeskyns sheepskin will blend in with bright and neutral colours alike.  Hence why it is such a popular choice for the nursery where décor often only lasts a couple of years.

Why Sheepskin? Baby Care

For centuries sheepskin and hide has been used as a form of baby care. The use of natural materials as opposed to synthetic alternatives for care and wellbeing of infants is once again becoming popular. In a world where we worry about the ethics and safety of materials that we use safety regulations are as important in the use of natural fibres, in comparison to synthetic. For this reason we are seeing an increase in the number of parents using our treated baby sheepskins in; cots, prams, strollers, and car seats.

Sheepskin Showing

Since our last blog update we have been meeting, and greeting many people at the tannery here in Waternish, and at various UK shows. It all begun in May when we started to see increased numbers of tourists pass through our doors. The show team were getting organised for the journey to London to exhibit at Grand Designs Live. No mean feat clocking up 635 miles each way, two days traveling including a stop off in Preston.  Grand Designs is the longest of the shows that Skyeskyns take part in; 9 consecutive days. Throughout the duration of the show we meet returning, and new customers, and also professionals in the interior design field. There is no better way of making people aware of our product and brand than by chatting to them, and allowing them to feel our ‘super soft’ wool. We have had many customers from the London show who have decided to visit Skye after our conversations on the stand. A few months later they are touring the tannery and looking at our breath taking views from the Skyeskyns showroom.

Rocky's Blog Petmat Review

Description of the Skyeskyns Pet Mat:
"The Skyeskyns Pet Mats come in 3 different sizes; Small, Medium and Large.

The smallest Pet Mat, the neck end of the skin, is a triangle shape with a base of 40cm and a height of 40cm. The middle sized Pet Mat, the bottom half of a skin, is approximately a rectangle shape of 60cm by 50cm.The largest Pet Mat is a full sized skin, measuring 90cm by 60cm. The Pet Mats come in 2 different colours; white and brown.

As the Pet Mats are second quality skins they may be misshapen, have small defects and possibly paint markings. They in no way effect the ability as a pet mat.

If needed, the Pet Mat can be wahsed on a 30°C wool cycle, using a recommended wool wash."

International Jet-Setters

Many of you may be pondering on how our first international show went in Paris last month.  Maison et Objet is the leading international interior design show for professionals in the field.  We were extremely excited to be accepted to attend at the end of last year.  Logistical challenges caused all of our gear (and our poor driver) to queue for many hours at the tunnel due to a fire the day before – eventually we all finally made it to Gai Paris just in time for set-up the following day.  Arriving at the rather sizable Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition centre we negotiated our way to our stand in hall 1 Ethnic Mic Chic.  With a flurry of forklifts, cardboard boxes and building activity stands were being erected on an industrial scale with elaborate decoration and merchandising taking shape.  Finally by 10pm that evening the Skyeskyns stand was complete after a few negotiations along the way.  Our modest 5x2 metre stand was ready to show the design world a selection of sheepskin shapes, sizes, designs and samples.

However, we do so with confidence for several reasons which may be relevant to the wider community.
